It was the year after Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and London was the world's largest capital city. Despite its prosperity, however, there existed a broad divide between the classes. The East End of London, was stricken with poverty and overcrowded with refugees from Europe. Robbery, violence, disease and drunkeness were commonplace. For the most vulnerable, there was a fine line between survival and utter destitution.
There was hunger, or the misery of the workhouse, and for uncounted thousands of women,
a life selling themselves on the streets of Whitechapel.
